2009 SERVICE PROJECT: MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

The Psi Omega Pi Chapter of the Chi Sigma Iota would like to recognize Callie Dalgren for her leadership in making the second Mental Health Week at Hohokam Campus a worthwhile contribution to campus life.

In an effort to promote both mental wellness and the Psi Omega Pi (POP) Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, POP hosted Mental Health Week 2009 at the University of Phoenix April 20-23, 2009.  Mental Health Week consisted of the management of tables in the lobbies of two buildings at the University of Phoenix.  Available at the tables were literature for various mental health issues and disorders.  Resources were also available, providing information for local clinicians, providers, and facilities.  Flyers advertising the University’s free counseling center were also on hand.

In addition to tables supplied with an abundance of information, classroom visits were conducted.  Members of POP visited 12 different classrooms throughout the four-day event.  The classroom visits focused on classes for students in the graduate counseling program and undergraduate students obtaining a degree in behavioral health.  During the classroom visits, members presented information regarding Mental Health Week, promoted membership and participation in the honor society, and advised students of the free services available at the University’s Counseling Skills Center.

Overall, Mental Health Week was very successful.  Hundreds of sheets of literature were distributed, so much so that by the end of the week, the tables had exhausted their supplies of many of the handouts.  Further evidence of success was exhibited by the sheer number of students and faculty who stopped by the tables and inquired about Mental Health Week and asked for resources or information on specific disorders or issues.
